The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asserted its dominance over Rivers State, declaring Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the party in full control of the state’s political landscape.

According to a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP claimed that all legislators who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) have forfeited their seats, citing constitutional provisions.

Ologunagba emphasized that legal considerations overwhelmingly favor the PDP, dismissing the APC’s claims as futile attempts to subvert Nigeria’s constitution.

He stated, “The facts and true import of Section 109(1)(g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), are clear. Former lawmakers who defected have since lost their seats, and attempts to challenge this in court are futile.”

“All House of Assembly members who joined the APC are now former members,” Ologunagba said, urging both the APC and the legislators to abandon hopes of their party assuming control of Rivers State.

“The APC should come to terms with the fact that the quorum of the Rivers State House of Assembly will be determined by the number of remaining lawmakers until bye-elections are conducted to fill the vacancies,” Ologunagba concluded.

In response, the APC accused Governor Fubara of actions indicating talks of impeachment processes amidst the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State.
