A proposal by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for a single six-year term presidency has sparked intense debate among Nigerians.

Atiku submitted the proposal to the National Assembly as part of the ongoing constitutional review, suggesting the amendment of Section 135(2) to limit the president’s tenure to six years without re-election.

He also proposed rotating the presidency among the six geopolitical zones.

Yerima Shettima of Arewa Youths Consultative Forum backed Atiku’s proposal, saying it would reduce anxiety and distractions among politicians.

Comrade Jare Ajayi of Afenifere and Yekini Nabena of the APC also supported the proposal, citing benefits of reduced desperation and increased party discipline.

However, concerns were raised about the National Assembly’s willingness to pass the proposal, with some doubting their ability to act independently of the Executive.
