Oludayo Adeagbo, a 45-year-old Nigerian, has been sentenced to seven years in a US prison for perpetrating a large-scale business email compromise (BEC) scheme.
The US Department of Justice revealed that Adeagbo attempted to steal over $3 million from various organizations in Texas.
Adeagbo targeted local government entities, construction companies, and a Houston-area college, exploiting them through sophisticated cyber-enabled fraud schemes.
He also conspired with accomplices to defraud a North Carolina university of over $1.9 million.
Adeagbo was extradited from the United Kingdom to the US in August 2022 to face charges.
In April, he pleaded guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Donald Echeazu, another Nigerian accomplice, received an 18-month prison sentence and was ordered to pay $655,408.87 in restitution.
The Department of Justice emphasized that Adeagbo’s actions resulted in significant financial losses.
This case underscores the severity of cyber-enabled crimes.
