The 2024 phase one of the Ardova Handball Premier League is set to commence on Monday in Benin City, with 22 teams arriving in the ancient city on Sunday for the top-tier handball event in Nigeria. The league, now in its seventh season, was rescheduled from its initial dates of April 28 to May 11 to allow participating teams sufficient time for registrations and preparation, in line with the sponsor Ardova Plc’s requirements.

The 22 teams, comprising 12 male teams and 10 female teams, held a technical meeting on Sunday ahead of the league’s start. According to Cosmos Chukwuemeka, HFN media assistant, “All teams arrived in Benin on Sunday morning, ready to begin the competition on Monday.”

The games will take place at the indoor sports hall of the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium and the Etete sports hall. Defending champion Niger United, who won their first league title last season since 2018 under coach Yekini Adebayo, will face Benue Buffaloes in their opening match. Tojemarine Academy, who finished second last season under coach Shittu Agboola, will aim for the title, starting with a match against newcomer Adamawa United.
