Dangote Refinery Faces Backlash Over Opposition to Petrol Imports

By: David Augustine

The Dangote Refinery’s stance against petrol imports has drawn criticism from petroleum marketers in Nigeria. Bill Gillis-Harry, President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association, expressed concerns in a Channels Television interview.

According to Gillis-Harry, no single entity, including refiners or marketers, has the authority to dictate the government’s decisions on petrol imports. He emphasized the importance of allowing all players in the oil and gas sector to participate freely, fostering competition.

Dangote Refinery reportedly sought a Federal High Court order to void petrol import licenses issued to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and other marketers. However, the company later clarified that the case is no longer relevant due to changing circumstances.
