Femi Falana, a renowned human rights lawyer, has criticized Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike’s decision to give judges houses and cars. Falana emphasized that Wike’s actions are unconstitutional, as the Minister’s budget is limited to the affairs of the FCT and cannot be used to provide gifts to judges.
Wike had initiated the construction of 40 houses for judges in Abuja, allocating 20 to judges of the FCT High Court, 10 to judges of federal high courts, and 10 to those in the court of appeal. Falana argued that this move undermines the independence of the judiciary, as judges may feel obligated to rule in favor of the executive branch.
Falana also criticized Wike’s demolition of private properties in the FCT, calling it “primitive” and a breach of the law.
