In a significant development, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has reappointed Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano, restoring him to the position he previously held. The reappointment was announced on Friday at the Government House in Kano, where Sanusi received his letter of reinstatement.

Governor Yusuf cited Sanusi’s competence, credibility, and popularity as reasons for his reappointment, which was supported by the recommendation of the kingmakers. The governor urged Sanusi to use his position to unite the emirate and foster harmony among Islamic sects in the state, guided by Islamic teachings.

Sanusi’s reinstatement follows a tumultuous period in Kano’s political history. He was initially deposed as the 14th Emir in 2020 after a fallout with former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who is now the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress. The Kano House of Assembly subsequently passed a bill splitting the Kano Emirate Council into five emirates, reducing Sanusi’s influence. He was eventually replaced by Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th Emir.

However, in a dramatic turn of events, the Assembly dissolved the five emirate councils on May 23, 2024, and passed the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024, paving the way for Sanusi’s reinstatement. The governor also gave the five emirs a 48-hour ultimatum to vacate their official residences and palaces.

Governor Yusuf described Sanusi’s victimization during his previous dethronement and expressed his conviction that the reinstatement is in the best interest of the people of Kano. He thanked the Speaker and members of the House for their determination and respect for the rule of law, which he believes demonstrates their commitment to the welfare of the state.

The event was attended by traditional rulers, kingmakers, and other dignitaries. Sanusi’s reinstatement marks a significant development in Kano’s political landscape, and his leadership is expected to bring stability and unity to the emirate.
