Lagos State residents have voiced concerns about the planned ban on single-use plastics and sachet water, citing potential job losses and economic disruption.

The ban, announced by Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, aims to reduce plastic waste and protect public health and the environment. However, residents fear the ban will harm those relying on sachet water sales for livelihood.

Residents suggest alternative solutions, such as educating people on proper disposal, providing bins, and enforcing regulations on sachet water producers.

Lagos residents, including water sellers and distributors, expressed their concerns:

“I am worried about employment. The ban will make thousands lose their source of income,” said Akinyemi Bolaji.

“Sachet water helps curb cholera. Banning it may lead to outbreaks,” added Vera Osiyemi.

“The government should provide alternative safe water sources before enforcing the ban,” advised Dr. Olufemi Adeyemi.

The Lagos State Government should consider residents’ concerns and explore alternatives to minimize the impact on livelihoods while addressing environmental concerns.
