Dominic Okafor, the Representative for Aguta Federal Constituency, Anambra State, has vehemently denied allegations of receiving a $140 million bribe from Nadeem Anjarwalla, an executive of the cryptocurrency platform, Binance. Okafor, who is also the Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Delegated Legislation, made this denial during a press conference in Abuja on Friday.
The lawmaker had sponsored a motion to investigate the escape of Anjarwalla, who was being detained for alleged tax invasion and terrorism sponsorship. However, an online media outlet reported that Okafor received the bribe from Anjarwalla, which he strongly denies.
Okafor described the report as an attempt to tarnish his image and integrity, which he has built over the years. He threatened to take legal action against the online media outlet if they do not retract the information within 24 hours.
The lawmaker stated that he joined politics from the private sector and has been a member of Rotary International Club for over 25 years. He emphasized that his motion to investigate Anjarwalla’s escape was in the interest of the country and not for personal gain.
Okafor is currently discussing with his legal team to determine the appropriate action to take against the online media outlet for the alleged defamatory report.
