In a bid to curb the sale of substandard goods, the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) arrested five individuals in Abuja on Wednesday for allegedly selling fake cosmetics. The arrests were made during an enforcement operation at the Garki and Wuse axis, following intelligence reports.
According to Mr. Embugushiki-Musa Godiya, Head of Investigation and Enforcement, Federal Taskforce, NAFDAC, the arrested persons will be thoroughly investigated, and the agency will work tirelessly to eradicate fake cosmetics and other counterfeit products from the country.
Godiya revealed that some of these products were illegally imported into the country, despite security measures at the borders. He emphasized that NAFDAC is present at all ports of entry, but smugglers often find ways to evade detection. Therefore, the agency relies on intelligence reports and market surveillance to track down and confiscate counterfeit products.
The seized cosmetics have a market value of N35 million, and NAFDAC will continue investigating the suspects to determine the extent of their involvement. If found guilty, they will be prosecuted for their crimes.
Godiya urged Nigerians to collaborate with NAFDAC in the fight against counterfeit products, which can pose significant health risks to consumers. By working together, we can create a safer and healthier society.
