The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed its members in states that haven’t implemented the new minimum wage to go on an indefinite strike starting December 1, 2024. This decision was made during the NLC’s National Executive Council meeting, where members expressed frustration over state governments’ delay and refusal to implement the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act.
The NLC accused state governments of betraying workers’ trust and disregarding their rights, leaving workers to face rising economic hardship and inflation. The organization demanded immediate implementation of the national minimum wage, comprehensive social protection policies, affordable healthcare, and a wage review to reflect the true cost of living.
Furthermore, the NLC criticized petroleum marketers for inflating petrol prices, exploiting Nigerians, and exacerbating their suffering. They urged the marketers government to regulate petrol prices and revive domestic refineries.
