Nigerian Communications Commission Cracks Down on Starlink Over Unauthorized Data Tariff Hike

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced plans to sanction Starlink, a communication company, for increasing its data tariff without obtaining the necessary approval.

According to Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs at NCC, Starlink’s actions contravene Sections 108 and 111 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 and its license conditions.

“The company’s decision to unilaterally increase its subscription packages was made without NCC’s approval,” Muoka stated. “We were surprised by their announcement of price changes, considering they had filed a request seeking approval for price adjustment, which we had yet to communicate a decision on.”

Muoka emphasized that Starlink’s actions threaten the regulatory stability of the telecommunications industry. The NCC views this unilateral decision as a breach of its license conditions regarding tariffs.

The Commission will take enforcement measures against Starlink to maintain regulatory stability and ensure that licensees adhere to established regulations and procedures.

This move reaffirms NCC’s commitment to protecting consumers’ interests and promoting a level playing field in the telecommunications sector.
