Nigeria’s Olympic Dreams Shattered as Team Returns Empty-Handed

Nigeria’s 19th Olympic appearance ended in disappointment, failing to secure a single medal at the Paris 2024 Games. Despite high expectations and a significant budget allocation, the team’s 88 athletes across 12 sports fell short, marking the country’s worst Olympic performance since London 2012.

Notable medal hopefuls, including Tobi Amusan, Blessing Oborududu, Favour Ofili, Ese Brume, and Quadri Aruna, failed to deliver, leaving Nigeria without a medal. Controversies marred the campaign, including Ofili’s omission from the women’s 100m roster and a kitting crisis.

The women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, provided a rare bright spot, reaching the quarterfinals under coach Rena Wakama’s leadership. However, their journey ended with a defeat to the USA.

The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, expressed disappointment and threatened to overhaul the sports federations, citing the need for fresh ideas and leadership. Azania Omo-Agege, interim President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, called for an inquest into the federation’s affairs following the controversy and failure in Paris.
