On Monday, Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, paid visits to several chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja, sparking speculation about potential alliances ahead of the 2027 general election. However, according to his spokesperson, Yunusa Tanko, the visits were focused on addressing the nation’s challenges and alleviating the suffering of all Nigerians.

Photographs circulating on social media showed Obi meeting with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 PDP presidential candidate, as well as former Senate President Bukola Saraki and Sule Lamido, a former governor of Jigawa State, at their respective homes in Abuja.

In a statement, Tanko explained that Obi’s visits were driven by his concern and commitment to the nation’s progress, with discussions centered on the state of the nation and ways to reduce the suffering of all Nigerians, regardless of class or location. The statement highlighted the desperate condition of the downtrodden, particularly in the Northern parts of the country, as a key area of focus in the discussions.

While some supporters of Atiku and Obi have speculated about potential alliances, there is no indication that the visits were related to the 2027 election. Instead, they appear to be part of Obi’s ongoing efforts to engage with leaders across the political spectrum to address the nation’s challenges and promote progress for all Nigerians.
