Abuja, Nigeria – In a surprise move, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has directed the immediate withdrawal of police personnel from the 23 local government areas of Rivers State.
The directive, announced Monday by Rivers State Command Public Relations Officer Grace Iringe-Koko, comes on the heels of recent political developments in the state.
According to Iringe-Koko, the withdrawal is aimed at ensuring the police force’s neutrality and facilitating the smooth operation of democratic institutions.
“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to maintaining peace and order, and this decision reflects our dedication to upholding the principles of democracy,” Iringe-Koko stated.
The police personnel will only be redeployed to the affected areas in the event of a crisis or breakdown of law and order, with contingency measures in place to swiftly restore normalcy.
Rivers State Command has reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to maintaining stability and professionalism in carrying out its duties.
Residents and stakeholders have been urged to remain calm and law-abiding as the situation unfolds.
This development marks a significant shift in the police’s stance on the political tensions in Rivers State, sparking hopes for a peaceful resolution.
