Scrapping Governors’ Immunity Sparks Fresh Debate

The ongoing constitutional amendment process has reignited debates on the immunity clause for governors and their deputies. Calls for its removal have been made, citing its encouragement of corruption and abuse of power.

Proponents of scrapping the immunity clause argue that it protects governors from prosecution, allowing them to commit atrocities with impunity. Labour Party’s factional national chairman, Alhaji Lamidi Apapa, and former lawmaker Mohammed Sani are among those advocating for its removal, citing the need for accountability and equality before the law.

On the other hand, Dr. Pogu Bitrus, president of the Middle Belt Forum, believes the immunity clause was wisely introduced to protect public officers from unnecessary distractions. He suggests modifying the clause to exclude criminal offenses, allowing governors to be prosecuted for crimes while in office.

Lagos-based legal practitioner Ikechukwu Onodi supports removing the immunity clause, citing its disservice to public interest and the selfish use of the privilege by politicians.

The debate highlights the need for a balanced approach, ensuring public officers are protected from undue distractions while being held accountable for their actions.
