President Bola Tinubu has emphasized the need for a more effective local government system that promotes community development and delivers essential governance within a robust federal framework. He warned that the local government administration is being suffocated and expressed his disapproval of turning local government into a unitary system.

Speaking to a delegation of the Yoruba Leaders of Thought at the State House, Tinubu stressed that governance must be transformative and address the critical needs of citizens. He also reflected on the past 12 months, describing them as fulfilling despite challenges that are being addressed.

Tinubu assured Nigerians that his administration will ensure value for every kobo spent and leave a lasting legacy of prosperity for future generations. He called for the deepening of governance and the reinforcement of leadership across all levels of government and institutions, committing to encouraging fiscal federalism and strengthening the system to enhance inclusion and equity for all Nigerians.

The President also emphasized the importance of synergy between the federal and state governments, urging state governors to take their responsibilities seriously and prioritize community development. He warned against suffocating local government administration and emphasized the need for flexibility and growth at the local level.

Tinubu thanked the delegation for their support and faith in Nigeria, assuring them that his government would live up to expectations. He concluded by highlighting the progress made in infrastructure development and the commitment to providing responsible, responsive, and accountable governance.
