Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed the head of his security agency, Serhii Rud, following the detention of two officers allegedly involved in a plot to assassinate him. The reason for Rud’s dismissal was not disclosed.
The two detained officers, both colonels, were accused of working with Russia’s security services to carry out “subversive activities” against Ukraine in exchange for money. They were charged with treason and preparing a terrorist act.
According to Ukraine’s security services, the plot aimed to target not only Zelensky but also other senior officials, including the head of the security service and the head of defense intelligence. The suspects allegedly received drones and ammunition from Russia’s security services to carry out an explosion.
This is not the first attempt on Zelensky’s life since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022. He has faced several close calls during his visits to the front lines and Ukrainian cities under Russian bombardment.
